The Urban Farming, Community Parks, and Green Spaces Program is one of SSIM’s flagship initiatives dedicated to promoting food security, environmental conservation, climate resilience, and community wellbeing in Mathare. Through urban farming, tree planting, community gardens, and the transformation of underutilized public spaces into safe and green environments, the program empowers residents to become active stewards of their environment.
The initiative encourages sustainable food production through sack gardens, vertical farming, cone gardens, and other climate-smart agricultural practices while creating recreational and learning spaces where children and youth can interact, develop their talents, and improve their mental wellbeing. By combining nature-based solutions with community participation, SSIM is building healthier neighborhoods, strengthening resilience to climate change, and inspiring communities to create a greener, safer, and more sustainable future.
