About This Program

Upishi Safi Briquettes Production is SSIM’s social enterprise that transforms organic and recyclable waste into clean, affordable, and environmentally friendly cooking briquettes. Established to address the challenges of waste management, deforestation, and the high cost of cooking fuel in informal settlements, the initiative provides a sustainable alternative to charcoal and firewood while creating livelihood opportunities for youth and community members.
Beyond producing clean cooking fuel, Upishi Safi promotes environmental conservation, climate resilience, and circular economy practices by reducing waste and greenhouse gas emissions. Income generated from briquette sales also supports SSIM’s community programs, including the Chakula Mtaani Feeding Program, helping to ensure their long-term sustainability.
Through innovation and community-led action, Upishi Safi Briquettes is proving that waste can be transformed into opportunity—creating cleaner environments, stronger livelihoods, and more resilient communities.

Current Needs: Upishi Safi Briquettes Production

As Upishi Safi Briquettes Production continues to grow, SSIM is seeking support to upscale the production centre by acquiring modern briquette production machinery, expanding the production workspace, and improving storage and packaging facilities to increase efficiency and meet the growing demand for clean cooking fuel. Additional support is needed for raw materials, transportation, staff capacity building, product certification, and market expansion. These investments will enable us to create more green jobs for youth and women, recycle more waste, increase access to affordable clean energy, strengthen climate resilience, and generate sustainable income to support SSIM's community programs, including the Chakula Mtaani Feeding Program.
